New email based FaceTime support has been found in the third beta of iOS 4.1, according to a MacRumors report.

A new option in the iOS “Contacts” application allows users to make FaceTime calls using either a phone number or an email address. This would allow FaceTime compatibility with devices not associated with a phone number such as future camera-enabled iPads and iPod touches.

BoyGeniusReport outlined how this will work last month, “Your Apple ID will be registered with your device/s, and that will allow other Apple devices to start a FaceTime call using your email address. Apple will also reportedly make use of push notifications to deliver these incoming FaceTime connection requests as we have been informed there is a push notification detector tied into the FaceTime frameworks in the new iPhone OS 4.1 beta.”

Apple is widely expected to bring FaceTime to the iPad and the iPod touch. Just yesterday images of a front LCD and bezel of the upcoming 4th generation iPod Touch may have been leaked online. Typically Apple updates the iPod lineup in September.
